Midwestcon 1970

Since my Club Photo account is about to expire, I was going though my photos to figure out how much work it will take to get more of them ready to upload to my ImageEvent albums. I noticed this one and remembered that I have yet to ID any of the people in it, although some of them look darned familiar—I feel like I ought to recognize at least some of them. I took the photo at the Midwestcon in Cincinnati in 1970. Help? Anybody? (Click on it to see it larger—you know the drill.) Thanks!

I got really good results when I asked the people in rec.arts.sf.fandom to help me identify old photos from Discon in 1974 and Lacon in 1972. If you like I could post pointing people at the photo and collect and forward the results, if any.

I'll probably take you up on that offer for some other photos in the future, but we have an ID on 4 of 5 of this one. Thanks!

Glad the ids have worked out this well. The Internet is *so* cool (Yeah, I can talk for quite a while about the downsides, too).

As you may have seen from my recent entry, I've now put my photos of the 1970 Midwestcon up on my collection at ImageEvent. It would be perfectly swell if you were to point the people in rec.arts.sf.fandom at the site and mention that ID assistance for entries in that album, as well as for those in my other convention albums, would be most welcome. Thanks!

I've posted a message in raseff; if anybody bites, you'll either get comments on the pictures, or I'll see discussion in the thread and forward via email any interesting conclusions.

Thanks again!

Oh my wordiness.

I will double check with Suzle, but I believe that's me on the left, then Suzle, Mike O'Brien and Greg Shrieve. I have no idea who #5 is.

Well, oh my Ghod! Yup, that is Jerry, me, Mike and Greg (we're pretty sure as we ID'd him separately).

Cool, thanks! Funny how these things work. I have a longer reply to Jerry, since his comment was higher up the stack.

Hi! btw. I didn't know you were on LJ! I, of course, immediately friended you. (Not that it will make a heck of a lot of difference at your end—I tend not to "friend lock" very many of my entries.)

Wow, thanks!

I had a very vague notion that it might be the two of you, but I wasn't the least bit sure. It's hard to tell at this juncture, the memory being the second to go and all (not to mention that I've always been shaky at correctly associating those all-too-slippery "whens" with the "whos" and "whats"), but I think when I took that photo I didn't yet know you and Suzle to look at you, although it seems likely that I knew of you by name and reputation. Greg Shrieve's name doesn't ring a bell with me at all, and Mike O'Brien … hmmmm … Is he the artist from whom I later that convention caged a cool doodle-covered sketchbook cover to use as a LOVE cover? Boston? Or am I thinking of someone else? (It's been such a long exposition, don'tchaknow.)

My guess is that I took the photo thinking, "Here come some interesting fen back from lunch," rather than, "Oh look! Jerry and Suzle and some other fen!" Although, you know, that was more than just a few dog-years ago…

Now you've done it, you've stolen their souls!

Fred, would it be okay if I offered this to our web geek to put this picture in the CFG archives? Our web geek has been keeping old pictures on the club site. It sounds like you've identified 4 of the 5. Denise

Re: Midwestcon photo
Fred hasn't actually identified anyone. 'Twas me and Suzle done it.

Fred, do you agree with our IDs? Does context help identify the fifth person?

Re: Midwestcon photo

It's twuue! It's twuue! T'was you and Suzle what done it!

I'll have to rely on your IDs; as I said in my reply to you, the other two names don't really ring bells with me. Perhaps in the fullness of time the fifth person will be identified and your IDs will be corroborated.

Re: Midwestcon photo

Hey Denise!

As Jerry said, t'was he and Suzle identified four out of five doctors fen.

As far as the CFG archives go, I essentially have no problem with that, especially if photo credit and copyright are preserved along with the photo, but I'd kind of rather that you waited until I get all my photos from the 1970 Midwestcon back up on line in my ImageEvent site and then grabbed any y'all want from there. I'm hoping it shouldn't take more than a couple months. I'll even do my best to remember to let you know when it goes up.

But do as you will—it's okay with me. I guess you could even grab this image now and then get the rest later.

Re: Midwestcon photo

As you may have seen from my more recent (a href="http://fredcritter.livejournal.com/73637.html">entry</a>, I've now put my photos of the 1970 Midwestcon up on my collection at ImageEvent. Yes, you may inform your web geek that they're there and may be harvested, as long as photo credit & copyright information remain attached. It wouldn't hurt to mention the url of the album either, in case people want to add IDs or look at similar albums…
