just shuffling along on the iPod . . . from the evening of 6 January 2006

The rules (as passed along by holzman): Take out your iPod or other musical device. Put it in “random” mode. Hit “play.” Write down the first ten tracks that come up—and no fair putting in ones you think will make you look cool, or omitting ones that make you look like a total dork.
My rules: The first ten selections while on my way to work and at work last night. (The listing starts with the first selection up when I get in the car and set the iPod to shuffle play so as to avoid the “optional starting and stopping” error so popular among ESP “researchers.”)

“Roadside Hotel” – Pearls Before Swine – The Wizard Of Is (Disc 1)
“Killing Floor” – Mike Bloomfield – Don’t Say That I Ain’t Your Man! Essential Blues 1964-1969
“Badge” – Fanny – First Time In A Long Time (The Reprise Recordings): Fanny
“Talqin-i Bayat” – Shashmaqam—The Bukharan Jewish Ensemble – Central Asia in Forest Hills, New York
“Cassidy” – Grateful Dead – Beyond Description (1973–1989): Reckoning
“Feets Don’t Fail Me Now” – Little Feat – Feats Don’t Fail Me Now
“Hesitation Blues” – Dave Van Ronk – Folkways Years 1959–61
“Next Time” – Ann Reed – Back & Forth
“Leaving Home Ain’t Easy” – Queen – Jazz
“The Bonny Ship The Diamond” – Judy Collins – Live At Newport
“(What’s So Funny ’Bout) Peace, Love And Understanding” – Elvis Costello – Best Of Elvis Costello And The Attractions

Fred, my brother! Is Pearls Before Swine out on CD now? I only have them on vinyl. I didn't know there was anyone else on the planet who still remembered them.

Yes, yes they are. I believe everything except Stardancer has been issued on CD. There's a box set called jewels were the stars on Water which contains four Reprise albums: These Things Too, The Use of Ashes, City of Gold, and …beautiful lies you could live in.; a fifth, Familiar Songs, is also on water; the two ESP discs, One Nation Underground and Balaklava are out both individually and on one CD; and Sunforest is out on Edsel. And there's a couple I didn't recognize: A Journal of the Plague Year on Rubric and the wizard of is: unreleased demo tapes and live recordings from 1967–1976, also on water. I can't say right now which are my favorites, as they all kind of swirl together in my mind, but, yeah, I remember them. Hope the CDs are still in print and you can find the ones you want!

That list has some of my favorite 1980s listening: the Dead, the Little Feat, and (of course) the Elvis Costello.
