Another Intersting Goon Show Fact

“The twenty-fourth show [of the 8th series], ‘Tiddleywinks,’ was inspired by a real-life tiddleywinks match in which the Goons had been involved. The Cambridge University tiddleywinks team had challenged the Duke of Edinburgh to a match; he nominated the Goons as his champions. Nothing loth, the Goons entered the fray. They lost.”
—The Goon Show Companion: A History and Goonography, Roger Wilmut and Jimmy Grafton, Robson Books, London, 1976, p.66

AH, one of the key inspirations for Monty Python's Flying Circus and the Firesign Theatre; probably secretly behind everything good and funny in the world since 1963. Perhaps I exaggerate. Fred can no doubt tell more.

Probably also a formative influence on the Beyond the Fringe crew, though they headed off in a more intellectual direction.
