Confusion

So it looks like I'll be heading out for Confusion toward the end of January. It's been … er … a few years since my last Confusion — it'll be interesting to see if I still remember how.

I'm not looking forward to the drive, not being anywhere near as young as I once was, but I'm hoping that I'll be able to have at least a modicum of fun once I'm there. Heck, I'll even be bringing my guitar along — maybe I'll be able to make some music. We'll see, I guess.

Given thatit is in Michigan, I'm guessing one Steve Macdonald will be there. So you should be able replensih your supply of Fun, possibly even craft some new Fun.

Mmmmmm. Interesting. Any speculation about where some of the other Steve Macdonalds will be?

Perhaps. Although the way things have been going, I might not recognize Fun even if it bit me. Fun might have to, you know, hit me over the head and drag me off into the bushes for me to even notice. Or maybe not — maybe I'll recognize it immediately as it sneaks past me on little cat feet on its way to play with others…

Coo. I'm glad you'll be there.

The music scene is generally of the Open Filk variety, so ingenious other arrangements might be worth pursuing. Nate's not going, dunno about Decadence. Howard has been known to make an appearance, but I have no idea if he's coming this year. Steve Leigh's got a new guitar....

Steve Leigh will indeed be there, with new guitar in hand (and I'll probably bring the acoustic bass, too, just for fun...)

Wheee ha! Yip yip yip! There'll be a hot time in the ol' town, indeed!

Thanks.

So I've heard. I'm likely to be worse than the proverbial Square Peg in that sort of situation … and about half as happy. Ah well. I guess we'll see how it works out once we get there.

…so ingenious other arrangements might be worth pursuing.
They might indeed. I've been in correspondence with the spendiferous Susan Moerdyk, ConFusion Concertmistress, but I haven't yet figured out a good way to convey What It Is That I Do so that she may devise the Best Ways to Use me. Did you have any Ingenious Other Arrangements in mind, or were you just sayin'?

Steve Leigh's got a new guitar&hellip
So I understand. This increases my optimism greatly — I've always enjoyed hearing Steve play. Although the last such occasion was regrettably long ago and far away.

I just realized that points to the real nub of things. It's not so much that I'll be looking for a place to stroke my own ego and shine and sh*t like that (although I guess a little of that might be nice) as it is that I'd very much like to be able to find a situation where I can thoroughly enjoy most of the other people who will be playing. I mean, the amount of time I spend in a music circle just listening to other people play always far exceeds the time I spend playing my own self — especially since I am, for the most part, incapable of playing along to others' songs. That's why the music at the Cooling of Toad Hall the other evening was so darned enjoyable for me — it was so darned much fun listening to everyone else play!

It will be great to see you at Confusion.

Maybe we can have music at the "Toronto Bid for Midwestcon" party. (It's a long story...)

Thnx. Yeah. Likewise.

Maybe we can have music at the "Toronto Bid for Midwestcon" party.
Now that's a thought. What do you suppose the hosts of the party would think of that?

wow, you're going to drive?
Are you taking the North passage or the southern one?

I'm so looking forward to seeing you!

Remember that the con has moved. I recommend that people from the West take I-94 to Ann Arbor, and just before Ann Arbor swing left on M14 and stick to M14 through the US23 interchange, then follow it to 275 - take 275 North (Flint) for just a few miles and catch a right onto 696 East(Port Huron). Take 696 to I75 North (to Flint again) and shortly afterwards take Exit #69 -Big Beaver Road. Go East on Big Beaver (which is also 16 Mile) and within a block the Marriott comes up on your left.
If you're quick, you can enter it at the first drive. Otherwise you have to turn around and get it on the next pass.

You can also take 94 straight to 75, but you have to deal with more Detroit traffic.

Re: wow, you're going to drive?
wow, you're going to drive?
Yeah. We unfortunately can't afford any less physically taxing mode of transport (although I did take a peek at the Amtrak website today, and was Sore Tempted). And Gavi and Susan won't be able to make it at all. Susan's even Strongly Suggesting that I'd best find someone with whom to crash rather than getting a room. We'll see. After all, a Man Has His Limits, and I'm not so young as I once was anymore these days.

Are you taking the North passage or the southern one?
Well, I'd half a mind to take the Northwest passage &hellip but I guess I don't want to end up like Franklin.

When you say "the North passage," do you mean the long way up above the lakes, though our Good Neighbor to the North? (I did that once in the other direction — returning to Minneapolis from Toronto. 'twas in the fall and very pretty &hellip but also very long. I don't think I'd want to do that in a hurry. Nor in the winter, come to think of it.) The ferry across Lake Michigan? (I've never taken that ferry. I've heard tell of it, though. I suppose I ought to some time. Although it seems I've heard it doesn't run in the winter either.)

No, I'll just be taking the boring old usual route through Wisconsin and Chicagoland and Michigan. Boring! I say. Old! I say. Usual! I say. … The trip to many, many, many of the conventions of my youth began with I94/I90 from Minneapolis to just shy of, to, or through Chicago — we went to way more conventions to the east and southeast than to the south or west. Oh, yes, and all those wonderful weekends in Wilmot! Although I do recall some damned fine conventions in St. Louis and Kansas City in those days. By gum! *thumps cane on floor* … erm … excuse me …

As I was saying&hellip. It's very pretty, as freeways go, but it did get old. And Boring. And Usual. The first time I drove I94 as far as Madison was in the late '60's — the Interstate hadn't even been completed yet … there were still stretches where we'd be dumped onto US12 until I94 resumed. If I remember correctly, one of the last bits to be completed was between Black River Falls and Tomah….

I'm so looking forward to seeing you!
Like, likewise. And meeting Bill, too!

Thanks for the directions! I'll have to remember to print them out.

*hugs*
