Why did you choose your user name? Is there any special meaning or story behind it?

I chose "Fredcritter" because … well … starting back around 1970 and pretty much from then on, my friends Ken Fletcher and Reed Waller have been including me in cartoons using a caricature looking more or less like the one I use for my standard user pic here (with minor changes over the years depending on the length and color of my hair and beard). And … you know … what can you call the person so depicted other than Da Fredcritter?

Btw, they look just exactly like me. I guess that's the sign of great cartoonists… (I'll have to collar KF one of these days and have him do a current version for iconizing here on the old LJ.)

I would say the mark of a great cartoonist is that he can put the lines exactly where they ought to be. That describes retooned perfectly (and it overlaps pretty well with your definition). I think my very first awareness of Minneapolis fandom (around 1970?) was seeing some of his art.

Hmmmm. Me, I'd say that's the mark of any great artist. But in that vein, I reckon the mark of a great cartoonist is that they can refrain from putting any lines where they shouldn't be…

Yes, retooned's art was already being seen regularly in all The Best Places in fandom back in around 1970.
