I agree with sleigh.

This reminds me that the books say that the painters started doing impressionism and other "modern" art for this reason: Photographers weren't able to make photos of emotional impressions, like this. 8)

The books say that? Poo. And here I thought that I'd come up with that analysis all on my very own. I guess it really is pretty obvious when you think about it.

I believe the other side of the coin is true as well—that photography came into being at that particular point in time not only because knowledge and technology had reached a stage that made it possible but also because the prevailing trend in western artistic effort and thought had been so much toward trying to achieve greater and greater "realism."
