Concerning Astronauts and "Diapers"

Okay, this has now come up in enough of my friends’ posts that I guess I need to post here on my top level this link to John Scalzi’s blog: The Driving 900 Miles In A Diaper Thing Is Not As Crazy As It Sounds.

In the justly famous words of Eeyore: “That Accounts for a Good Deal, It Explains Everything. No Wonder.”

I'll always mentally picture them in diapers!

Because I know waaaay too much about the astronaut program
Heh. Are you aware of the *cough* liquid contianment issue they had on the first US manned flight?

For a brief but inaccurate recollection of the story take a look at http://www.cnn.com/US/9807/22/obit.shepard.02/. CNN has it wrong that Shepard was imitating Chuck Yeager, though; Smilin' Al was fond of Bill Dana's "Jose Jimenez" character and did variations on his routine throughout Mercury training. When al had to pee in his spacesuit, he was mimicking Dana, not Yeager.

The story can be found in Tom Wolfe's The Right Stuff,</a> a marvelous book to read or re-read.

Re: My name ... Jose Jimenez
Bill Dana ... now there's a comedian whose career is deader than dead. I can imagine Michael Richards making his comeback before Dana.

As for jokes about astronauts going to the bathroom in place, don't forget Don Knotts in "The Reluctant Astronaut."
