Well, that didn't work—the internal hard disk is still damaged. *sigh* I've done some poking around, and it looks as if my current strategy will be to install a new & different bootable hard drive, get it up and running, and buy a copy of Data Rescue II (which looks as if it might allow me to recover at least some of the files from the old disk) and run it from the new drive. Pooh. I didn't need this.
